Veteran Hindi and Bengali actress Sumita Sanyal died today. Born on October 9, 1945, she was 71 years old and was living in Kolkata these days. She was married to film editor Subodh Roy and is survived by a son.
People remember her from her countless roles in both Bengali and Hindi cinema. She made her debut in a 1960 Bengali film, Khokhababur Pratyabartan. This was to be one of over 40 Bengali films that saw her as a heroine.
In fact she even did a movie opposite then superstar Dilip Kumar by the name of Sagina Mahato. Her roles in Hindi films are equally appreciated. Her most notable and memorable performance came opposite Amitabh Bachchan in the movie Anand.
Some other movies of note are Guddi, Aashirwad and Mere Apne. As you can guess, most of these are very close to the hearts of our people. So there are a lot of people who are taking their time to wish their condolences.
Even the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee tweeted about the actress and the sadness her death has caused us all.
