Oscars hold a very high value for people involved in the film industry. This value surpasses borders and is coveted all across the world.
People involved in Indian cinema however don’t generally get much recognition though. In fact, after the Lagaan snub we have mostly given up on our Oscar dreams.
But, even though we don’t hope for many nominations, it seems the Oscar Academy still values our opinions. This sentiment was showcased recently, when the Academy sent out its membership invitations.
These invitations are sent to people that are considered worthy of judging cinema. So it was a great pleasure when we found out how many Indians were invited this year.
The names ranged from Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan, Irrfan Khan, Deepika Padukone among others.
But in all the names, one important one was missing, Shahrukh Khan. This caused a lot of uproar as Shahrukh fans thought this was a huge insult to the superstar.
The outrage spilled over to social media where devoted fans started berating the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for their decision and demanding an explanation.
However the explanation they gave is something no SRK fan would accept. Here’s what they said, “The basic requirement is that a candidate must have demonstrated exceptional achievement in the field of theatrical motion pictures.”
While this may sound like a simple statement, in reality it is as insulting as they can get. Even SRK haters will accept that the star has achieved a lot of exceptional things in his long career.
To dismiss everything he has done outright is not a smart thing to do for the Academy. Especially if they are trying to showcase themselves as culturally relevant.
We can expect more fallout from this statement, so we will keep you up to date about all further developments. Tell us your views in the comments.
